Wasn't it Newman's realization that the Catholic Church was right about the Monophysite heresy that led him on the road to conversion? When and where was that going on? HINT: not in the UK!

If the reason for Newman being canonised was his 'Englishness',then this alone isn't enough- which I suspect The Tablet knows. Newman's heroism in the sacrifice of his position in society as an Anglican clergyman, the hatred for him from many quarters and the miracles ascribed to his intercession is the true reason for his sainthood. He made it easier for others to follow their conscience to the Catholic faith and for existing Catholics to ultimately not face the sort of discrimination that had once been the case. All Catholics and those who are considering becoming Catholics owe him a debt of gratitude- one which the Tablet should do well to remember.

I write as an Anglican, and I'm baffled by the Tablet's suggested stress on Blessed JHN's "Englishness". Just who do they hope not to offend?

The last time I heard the Cardinal Archbishop of Mechelen and Brussels preach, he quoted Catherine of Siena, Henri de Lubac, and Newman. Somehow, I don't think Newman's "Englishness" has a great deal of importance in the greater scheme of things ...

One might be inclined to hope that the English bishops might be similarly inclined to celebrate the "Englishness" (and "Welshness") of the Forty Holy Martyrs of England and Wales. Blessed Cardinal Newman, pray for us.

Congratulations on your response to the Tablet's Editorial. The wording of your response brings the spirit of Newman into our time.

Certainly Newman changed his religious allegiance because he came to the conclusion that the successor of the Church of the Fathers was the contemporary body in communion with Rome. He followed his conscience. It had nothing to do with being an Englishmen, the same logic would apply in France, Spain, etc. However he did delight many Englishmen and women with his eloquent defence of the right of conscience in his Letter to the Duke of Norfolk.
